UIC’s First Writing for Digital and New Media Class

The first course of its kind offered at UIC debuted during the Spring 2016 semester with an inaugural class of 18 students.

Chicago, IL, April 14, 2016 – The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is currently offering its students a course entitled English 383: Writing Digital and New Media.  The university’s course catalogue describes the course as a lesson in the rhetorical, practical and ethical aspects of digital writing. The class prepares students for a writing career during the 21st century, a time during which most professional writing is being streamlined for online consumption.

“It really helps you figure out how to condense your writing so that it’s a decent length for platforms online,” student Bernadine Williams said of the course. “Before taking it, I had trouble making my writing concise and to the point, but this class has challenged me to do that.” The class was designed, developed and taught by Dr. Margena A. Christian, a nationally published editor and writer whose work has appeared in weekly and monthly magazines along with online platforms, including Ebony, Jet, Ebony Man, Ebony South Africa and Ebony.com.

The class provides the students with the skills to do their own writing, without necessitating a full team, by providing them with the tools to perfect skills such as interviewing, copyediting, web design, and photojournalism. Additionally, the course emphasizes the importance of ethical professional writing, warning students to avoid language that would make their work subject to defamation lawsuits. The course will be offered again for students during the Spring 2017 semester.
